I am going to start briefly describing the dental assistant role and then I will present some valuable resources for those who need to find dental assistant jobs.
Dental assistants portray a very big role in a dentist’s and clients’ overall dental experience. A smooth dental experience will not be possible without the help of a dental assistant. Most dentists, if not all, have about one or two assistants in their clinics to assist them in different activities going on in the clinic. Their responsibilities include:
• Introducing to the patient the treatment that needs to be done and making sure they give a good impression
• Have the patient sit comfortably and relax in the dental chair
• Preparing the patient for the procedure (putting bib/drape, filling cup with water, etc.)
• Checking dental records for old patients and assisting new patients to fill up new forms
• Assisting/handing the dentist the necessary equipments and tools for the procedure (making sure they are already been sterilized)
• Help out dentist in doing laboratory work (these assistants may have medical background to perform these tasks)
In the US, most states don’t require that a dental assistant jobs to be performed by a college graduate or hold any degree. But there are some states that require them to have a medical background and must be licensed and registered under American Dental Association. There is a certification specifically for dental assistants called Certified Dental Assistant, or CDA for short. This requires them to pass a certain exam for dental assistants.
Dental assistant jobs and career paths may vary. It all depends if they choose to have a formal education regarding dentistry or not. If not, they can be dental assistant instructors, or sales representative for dental products. Another career path is to become a dental office manager. Opportunities are quite limited for those who choose not to pursue a degree. On the contrary, it will be a big advantage if one chooses to get a degree in dentistry. This is because of the fact that they already have past experiences on the same field so studying them will not be that difficult.
