San Diego Teeth Whitening

Every one of us would love to have sparkling white teeth and in the world of cosmetic dentistry, teeth whitening is the king. Recent advancements in the cosmetic dentistry industry made teeth whitening readily available for men and women alike. Luckily in San Diego, a lot of dentists are offering this dental treatment. Achieving that pearly white smile has never been easier.

San Diego teeth whitening is done to patients who want to have a brighter smile and the goal is to achieve that whiteness while still looking natural. This treatment is done to remove stains and discoloration. Staining and discoloration of the teeth can come from excessive drinking of coffee and soda and from smoking. Genetics can also play a role. Some of us have naturally whiter and brighter teeth than others and as we age, our teeth naturally lose the mineral that make our teeth white. However, you have to let your cosmetic dentist know if you are under medication because certain medications can cause teeth discoloration too.

There are a lot of procedures and techniques done to achieve teeth whitening. Some of these procedures can be done at the dental clinic and some can be done at home. The most common San Diego teeth whitening procedures are:

• Britesmile Teeth Whitening – This procedure uses a whitening gel and then exposed to a special light. This is done in a dental clinic and is often followed up with a home bleaching kit.

• Custom Fit Tray Bleaching – The dentist will make impressions of the patient’s mouth and makes a custom tray out of it. A small amount of bleaching gel is placed in the tray and is worn over your teeth. This procedure can be done at home.

• Laser Bleaching – A bleaching gel is applied to the teeth of the patient and then exposed to a laser light. The laser light deeply penetrates the teeth enamel therefore increasing the effectiveness of the bleaching gel. This procedure is done in a dental clinic.

• Store-brought Strips – A whitening strip is placed in your upper and lower teeth. This procedure is easy and can be done at home though the whitening effect is not as strong compared to procedures done in the dental clinic.

There are things to consider before undergoing teeth whitening. These are:

• Artificial teeth – Artificial teeth such as porcelain veneers are not affected by bleaching. If their colors were matched to the color of the patient’s teeth prior to teeth whitening, the natural teeth will become whiter than the artificial teeth. This is called Technicolor teeth. A new set of artificial teeth will be then be needed.

• Sensitivity – The bleach applied to the teeth can cause temporary increase in sensitivity caused by touch, pressure, and temperature.

• Gum Irritation – Gum contact with the whitening agent can cause irritation. This is usually caused by high concentrations of bleach.

As discussed earlier, it is important to tell your cosmetic dentist of any underlying medical condition or previous dental procedures done before proceeding with this treatment to avoid any unnecessary and unwanted outcome.

The costs of having your teeth whitened can vary depending on the procedure done and the number of treatments required. Be prepared to shoulder the cost for the teeth whitening procedure because dental insurance usually does not cover the cost of the teeth whitening procedure.

You can enjoy the newly brought glow on your teeth for years to come but it doesn’t mean that you could go back to staining your teeth again. Care after the teeth whitening procedure is also important to maintain that glow. You don’t want to waste your money on another teeth whitening procedure.

A whiter smile can bring wonders to people and for those people in San Diego, you’ve never been luckier. San Diego Teeth whitening is just at your fingertips
